Hey, Andy Cohen: We need to talk.RELATED: Let's Talk About Real Housewives of New York City's Drunk and Wonderful Fight
As an avid Bravo fan, there’s no question that you dropped the ball with “The Real Housewives of New York” this season.
Not even Bethenny Frankel could salvage what has become a mess of a franchise, stemming from everything from Sonja Morgan’s near-weekly meltdowns to Ramona Singer’s childish antics. With increasingly formulaic story lines — Frankel fights and cries, Morgan flies off the handles, Singer swigs Pinot Grigio — what’s the point of tuning in anymore?
Having eight, yes, eight “Housewives” on board should have been a ratings home run, but when the cast members fail to connect with each other, let alone viewers, it’s a problem. While newbie Dorinda Medley has been a breath of fresh air this season, it’s difficult to get to “know” her when the drama surrounding the name of a nail-polish line hogs the camera time.
There’s nothing entertaining about the SkinnyGirl mogul bickering with Kristen Taekman over what the title of her collection should be. Nor do viewers want to see the “Singer Stinger” attack LuAnn de Lesseps over a petty argument for the zillionth time. We get it: Some cast members have rockier relationships than others, but audiences don’t need a refresher each week.
The golden age of the Big Apple featured the girls going to fashion shows, visiting exotic locales — who could forget the over-the-top Abu Dhabi adventure in Season 4?— and of course, actual drama. And I’m not talking Heather Thomson making a snide remark behind a budding fashion designer’s back.
Singer bashing then-castmate Alex McCord’s hubby, Simon van Kempen, while in his presence is outrageous. Kelly Bensimon going off the rails and proclaiming Frankel could kill her while she sleeps is certifiably insane — but it gets viewers talking and draws them in.
